Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Solos and small firms that want human-quality answering, intake and scheduling, with AI available to cut cost.

Bottom line

For a small firm that wants professional answering with an AI option to stretch minutes, Abby is a sensible pick; port in your own number, watch usage, and remember cancellation takes 30 days' notice after the first month.

A month-to-month virtual receptionist service with human, AI or Human + AI answering, published plans from $165 for 50 minutes, and doubled minutes when calls go to AI. Ring time is billable and calls round up to the next 30 seconds, crossing 1,000 minutes in a billing period can trigger an automatic Enterprise re-price, and Abby-assigned numbers stay Abby's.

Not for

High-volume intake operations near 1,000 minutes a month, and firms that need a legal-only receptionist service.

Pricing from

  • After the first 30 days, cancellation needs 30 days' notice (Abby terms)

Quick answer

Bottom line: Abby Connect fits solos and small firms with moderate call volume that want human receptionists, an AI receptionist, or a mix you can change at any time. Plans are published (vendor claims, checked October 15, 2026): Starter $165 (50 minutes), Essential $329 (100), Professional $599 (200), Growth $1,380 (500) a month, with double the minutes when calls go to AI. There's a free trial; cancel by email at least 24 hours before it ends or you're charged. The traps: ring time counts and each call rounds up to the next 30 seconds, going past 1,000 minutes in a billing period lets Abby automatically move you to an Enterprise plan at $2.76 a minute (ask for an opt-out in writing), cancellation after the first month needs 30 days' notice, and numbers Abby assigns you stay Abby's, so port in your own number.

What does Abby Connect actually do?#

Abby is a general virtual receptionist company with a legal-industry offering. Per its site, it handles inbound and outbound calls, client intake, appointment scheduling, bilingual answering, after-hours and overflow coverage, and live chat, with call records in its AbbyGo app and web portal. It advertises 24/7 coverage, U.S.-based service and more than 1,000 integrations.

The distinctive part is choice per call: human receptionists, an AI receptionist, or Human + AI, where you decide which calls go where and can change the split whenever you like.

What this means for you: You can send simple calls (hours, directions, "is my appointment still on?") to AI and keep humans for new-client intake, where a warm first impression matters more.

How much does Abby Connect cost?#

From abby.com/pricing and the plan table in Abby's terms (vendor claims, checked October 15, 2026):

Abby Connect published plans (monthly)

Enterprise plans are custom. Abby says your minutes double when you choose AI, there's no setup fee, plans are month-to-month, and you can move up a plan at any time.

How Abby Minutes are counted#

From Abby's terms, paraphrased: each call's ring time, talk time and transfer time are measured separately and each rounded up to the second, then the total is rounded up to the next 30 seconds. Hold time isn't counted. On outbound calls, time waiting for the other side to pick up, wrong numbers you supplied and leaving voicemails all count.

So a 40-second call bills as a minute, and a phone that rings four times before Abby picks up is on the clock. For firms with lots of short calls, effective cost per call runs higher than the plan math suggests.

What are Abby Connect's contract terms?#

From Abby's Terms & Conditions (last updated August 19, 2026), paraphrased:

  • Month-to-month, auto-renewing. During the first 30 days of a paid subscription, you can cancel any time. After that, you need to give at least 30 days' notice, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle in which that notice period ends. Confirm with Abby whether final-month fees are prorated and how last-month overages are billed.
  • Refunds. Abby's terms describe a 22-day money-back guarantee for new clients' initial purchase (not renewals or add-ons) and otherwise no refunds. Confirm with Abby exactly what the guarantee covers before you rely on it.
  • Free trial. To avoid being charged, cancel by email at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
  • Phone numbers. A number Abby assigns you remains Abby's property. A number you port in stays yours. You can port away if your account is in good standing and, for Abby-assigned numbers, you've had the number more than 30 days.
  • Call recording. If you opt in, callers are told the call is recorded. If you decline, Abby may still record the receptionist's side of the call.
  • Disputes go to binding arbitration, with class-action and jury-trial waivers.

How hard is Abby Connect to set up?#

Low. You write call-handling instructions and intake scripts, decide which calls go to humans and which to AI, connect your calendar or CRM, and either port your number or forward calls. The ongoing work is tuning scripts: every extra question a receptionist asks is billable time.

What do users say about Abby Connect?#

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns.

What users like. Law firms describe professional, attentive receptionists, fewer missed calls and voicemail complaints than with previous providers, and useful call records.

What frustrates them. Billing comes up most: charges for spam calls and ring time, overages that weren't expected, and no warning before overage pricing kicks in. Some report upselling during onboarding, uneven receptionist quality, small talk that adds minutes, slow account changes, and at least one dispute over charges after cancellation. Most of these line up with the rounding and notice rules in the terms.

Buyer tips before you sign#

  1. Port your number in rather than taking an Abby-assigned one.
  2. Ask how to see minute usage in real time, so overage isn't a month-end surprise.
  3. Ask for a written opt-out from the automatic Enterprise upgrade if you could cross 1,000 minutes, or negotiate Enterprise terms up front.
  4. Keep scripts tight. Ring time and every extra question cost money.
  5. Cancel the trial 24 hours early if it's not for you, and give 30 days' notice after the first month.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Human, AI or both, switchable any time.
  • Published plans and overage rates, no setup fee.
  • AI doubles your minutes.
  • Free trial and a 22-day money-back guarantee for new clients.

Cons

  • Ring time billable; 30-second rounding.
  • Automatic Enterprise upgrade past 1,000 minutes.
  • 30-day cancellation notice after month one.
  • Assigned numbers stay Abby's.

How does Abby Connect compare?#

Smith.ai sells AI and human receptionists priced per call rather than per minute. Ruby is minute-based human reception with its own rounding rules. LEX Reception is human-only and legal-focused, with published minute plans. Compare on your actual call log, since per-minute and per-call pricing favor different call patterns.
