Upfirst Review (2026): A Per-Call AI Receptionist for Small Firms

Upfirst is an AI receptionist that charges by the call, which makes a long intake call cost the same as a wrong number. It's built for small businesses generally, with a law-firm use case, and the price is low enough to try on a whim.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Solos and small firms that want low-cost 24/7 AI answering, intake questions and appointment booking.

Bottom line

For a solo or small firm that wants every call answered and summarized without paying receptionist rates, Upfirst is an easy trial; configure the recording disclosure and the intake questions carefully, and keep humans for the calls that need judgment.

A low-cost AI phone receptionist billed per call, with plans from 30 to 600 calls a month, 24/7 or overflow answering, call summaries, warm transfers, Clio calendar booking and spam blocking. No contract, a 14-day free trial, a written promise not to train AI on your content, and 90 days to export after you cancel. It's AI only, so there's no human fallback.

Not for

Firms that want human receptionists or complex, branching intake scripts handled by people.

Pricing from

$24.95/month for 30 calls, or $20/month billed annually (upfirst.ai/pricing, vendor claims checked 2026-10-15)

Pros

  • Billed per call, not per minute, and spam calls are blocked so you don't pay for them (upfirst.ai/pricing)
  • Books into Google, Outlook, Clio, Calendly and others (upfirst.ai/pricing)
  • No contract; cancel, upgrade or downgrade anytime; 14-day free trial, no card (upfirst.ai/pricing)
  • Terms say your content won't be used to train or fine-tune AI models (upfirst.ai/terms-of-service)

Cons

  • AI only; no human receptionist option
  • Recording-consent compliance is your responsibility (upfirst.ai/terms-of-service)
  • Terms can change without prior notice (upfirst.ai/terms-of-service)
  • General small-business product, not legal-specific

Quick answer

Bottom line: Upfirst suits solos and small firms with modest call volume that want every call answered, screened and summarized by an AI receptionist for far less than human reception. It bills per call, not per minute (vendor claims, checked October 15, 2026): Starter $24.95 (30 calls), Premium $59.95 (90) a month, with Pro $159.95 (300) and Scale $299 (600) also listed, and 20% off billed annually. Spam calls are blocked and not charged. There's no contract and a free trial (Upfirst lists 14 days with no card; confirm with Upfirst). The catches: it's AI only, calls may be recorded by default and recording consent is your responsibility, the terms can change without notice, and you have 90 days after cancelling to export before your content is deleted.

We built this review from Upfirst's own website, pricing page and terms of service (effective September 29, 2026), plus our overall reading of public user feedback. Everything was checked October 15, 2026. Prices are vendor claims and change, so confirm with Upfirst.

What does Upfirst actually do?#

Upfirst sells to small businesses of all kinds and has a law-firm page pitching call screening, faster intake and lead qualification. Every plan includes the same features, per its pricing page:

  • 24/7, overflow-only or after-hours answering, your choice.
  • Instant call summaries by text or email when the call ends.
  • Call recording and transcription.
  • Warm transfers to you or your team.
  • Appointment booking into Google, Outlook, Clio, Acuity, Calendly, Square and others.
  • In-call texting, such as sending a booking link mid-call.
  • Spam blocking, so you don't pay for junk calls.
  • 35+ languages, with transcripts translated into yours.
  • Caller memory, so returning callers don't start over.
  • Zapier and custom actions to push caller details into a CRM with an API.

Setup starts with your website: Upfirst uses it as a starting point, then you customize the questions, FAQ answers and integrations. You can forward your existing number or port it in at no charge.

What this means for you: For the price of a few billable minutes a month, every call gets answered and summarized. The trade-off is that a prospective client in a stressful moment talks to software, so write the script with that in mind.

How much does Upfirst cost?#

From upfirst.ai/pricing (vendor claims, checked October 15, 2026):

Upfirst published plans (monthly / billed annually)

Additional agents (for a second business or location) are listed at $9.95 a month each. The pricing page lists Pro at 300 calls ($159.95 a month, $128 billed annually) and Scale at 600 calls ($299, $240 annually), and every plan comes with a 14-day free trial that needs no credit card. Pro and Scale get a priority support queue. Human support runs weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern; on weekends it's an AI assistant.

Per-call billing changes the math compared with per-minute receptionists. A 12-minute intake call and a 40-second wrong number cost the same. If your calls run long, that's in your favor. If most are quick, compare against your call log.

What this means for you: a long new-client intake costs no more than a hang-up, which is the opposite of how minute-based services bill.

What are Upfirst's terms?#

Upfirst's pricing FAQ says there's no contract and you can cancel, upgrade or downgrade anytime. Its terms of service (effective September 29, 2026) add, paraphrased:

  • No AI training on your content. Upfirst says it won't use your content to train or fine-tune AI models and won't let its sub-processors do so. It may use de-identified, aggregated data to improve the service.
  • 90 days to export after you cancel. Resubscribe within that window and your content is still there. After at least 90 days, it's permanently deleted. You can ask for earlier deletion.
  • Recording consent is on you. The service may record calls by default. Upfirst doesn't know where callers are, and recording laws differ: some require consent from everyone on the call, some only from one party. Compliance is your job.
  • Terms can change at any time without prior notice; continued use means you accept them.
  • Liability is capped at the greater of what you paid in the prior 12 months or $100.

How hard is Upfirst to set up?#

Very low. It's self-serve: enter your website, edit the questions and answers, connect your calendar, and forward your number. Upfirst offers a free 30-minute onboarding call and chat support.

What do users say about Upfirst?#

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns. The volume of public reviews is still small.

What users like. Easy setup, responsive support (including help porting numbers), a natural-sounding voice, and rules for routing different call scenarios.

What frustrates them. Minor setup friction, like fixing how names are pronounced, and wanting more example scripts. Training the receptionist well takes some upfront time.

Buyer tips before you sign#

  1. Run the 14-day trial on real calls. Forwarding real calls is allowed.
  2. Pull your call log and compare per-call against per-minute pricing for your actual mix.
  3. Add a recording disclosure to the greeting.
  4. Script the "can you give me legal advice?" moment so the AI declines and routes properly.
  5. Export call records before you cancel if you need them; you have 90 days after.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Per-call pricing, with spam not billed.
  • Low entry price and no contract.
  • Clio calendar booking and warm transfers.
  • No-training clause for your content.

Cons

  • AI only.
  • Recording compliance is on you.
  • Terms can change without notice.
  • Not legal-specific.

How does Upfirst compare?#

Smith.ai offers both AI and human receptionists and is built with law firms heavily in mind. Abby Connect lets you mix human and AI answering, billed per minute. Rosie is another low-cost AI answering service for small businesses.
