Clio Review (2026): Clio Manage Plans, Pricing, and the Fine Print

Clio is the practice management system most small firms shortlist first, and for good reasons. Only one price is published, though, and 'cancel anytime' means something narrower than it sounds.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Solos to mid-size firms that want broad integrations, built-in trust and operating accounting, and intake and research AI from the same vendor.

Bottom line

If you want one widely supported system for matters, billing, and trust accounting, Clio belongs on the shortlist; price Core rather than Starter, and calendar a negotiation 60 days before renewal.

Broad, reliable practice management with accounting on every plan and the biggest integration marketplace in the small-firm market. Only Starter's price is published, cancellation takes effect at end of term, and seat cuts wait for renewal.

Not for

Buyers who want transparent pricing without a sales call, firms that want add-ons for only a few users, or larger firms with complex permission and reporting needs.

Pricing from

Starter from $49/user/month; Core, Signature and Elite by quote (clio.com/pricing, vendor claims checked 2026-10-15)

Pros

  • Accounting with trust and operating reconciliation on every plan (clio.com/pricing)
  • Large integration marketplace from Core up (clio.com/pricing)
  • AI features from Core up; Clio says firm data isn't used to train AI (clio.com/pricing)
  • 99.9% uptime guarantee and SOC 2 Type II, per Clio (clio.com/pricing)

Cons

  • Only Starter's price is published (clio.com/pricing)
  • Cancelling mid-term leaves the rest of the term due (clio.com/tos)
  • Seat cuts and downgrades only at renewal (clio.com/tos)
  • Documents don't bulk-export easily on exit, a common user complaint

Quick answer

Bottom line: Clio is a strong shortlist pick for firms that want one system for matters, billing, and trust accounting. Price Core rather than Starter, and negotiate about 60 days before renewal, because that's the only time you can cut seats or downgrade.

Clio is cloud practice management: matters, contacts, calendars, documents, time tracking, billing, online payments, and trust accounting, with full accounting built into every plan. Clio Grow adds intake and a lead CRM, and Clio Work adds research and drafting AI. Starter is published from $49 per user per month (Clio doesn't say whether that's billed monthly or annually; checked October 15, 2026); Core, Signature, and Elite are by quote. "Cancel anytime" means cancellation at the end of your term: cancel mid-term and the rest of the term is still due. Seat cuts and downgrades only happen at renewal, so negotiate about 60 days before it.

We built this review from Clio's own pricing page, terms of service, and press releases, plus our overall reading of public user feedback. Prices are vendor claims checked October 15, 2026. Confirm with Clio before you buy.

What does Clio actually do?#

Clio is really a family of products, and the names matter when you read a quote.

  • Clio Manage is the core: contacts, matters, calendaring, tasks, unlimited document storage, time and expense tracking, and invoicing (hourly, flat, contingency, and LEDES/UTBMS, the coded billing formats insurers and corporate clients often require). It includes online payments, trust accounting, and full accounting on every plan: bank sync, trust and operating reconciliation, a chart of accounts, and check printing. Many firms can drop QuickBooks.
  • Built-in AI starts at Core. It drafts bills on a schedule, turns documents into calendar events and tasks, drafts client updates, and prioritizes tasks. AI report-building starts at Signature. Clio says firm data is never used to train its AI.
  • Clio Grow handles intake: lead capture, forms, booking, review requests, referral and ad-spend tracking, and AI phone, web, and email agents. The AI agents are priced per matter you hire through them, an unusual pay-for-results model. Grow is included in Elite and sold as an add-on for Core and Signature.
  • Clio Work is the research and drafting workspace built on Vincent AI, which came with Clio's acquisition of vLex. It's quote-only. We cover it in our Vincent AI review.
  • Add-ons include Clio for Personal Injury (medical records, damages, settlements, with a HIPAA business associate agreement) and Advanced Document Automation for court forms. Both are by quote.

Clio by the published numbers

What this means for you: The one public price is the plan most firms outgrow first, so treat $49 as a floor, not a budget.

Source: clio.com/pricingClio pricing page, checked 2026-10-15. Only Starter shows a price. Not published means the page shows 'Get pricing'.

What this means for you: Starter has no conflict check, no client portal, no custom fields, and no integrations. If you need any one of those, you're shopping for Core, so get that quote.

Clio markets Elite with "save over 17%," meaning versus buying Signature and Grow separately. Without published prices, you can't check that figure until you have quotes for all three.

Payment processing is a separate cost#

Clio Payments works on every plan. Clio lists 2.95% for cards (3.75% for Amex), 1% for eCheck/ACH, and 4.95% for Affirm pay-later. Court e-filing is pay-per-filing. Those rates are Clio's alone; if you compare a dedicated legal processor, compare its own published rates, not a blended number. Run your annual card collections through each rate before deciding.

What are Clio's cancellation and renewal terms?#

Clio's pricing FAQ says there's no long-term commitment and you can cancel anytime. In practice, cancellation takes effect at the end of your current term, and Clio's terms of service say that if you cancel mid-term, the unpaid balance for the rest of the term is due immediately. On an annual plan, you're paying for the year either way. Only the account Administrator can cancel, and only by calling Clio support.

The other terms worth knowing:

  • Seat cuts and downgrades take effect only at renewal. Hire wrong in March and you're paying for that seat until the anniversary.
  • Expired discounts drop off at renewal. A first-year promo won't follow you into year two unless you negotiate it.
  • Multi-year deals renew one year at a time afterward, at a new annual price.
  • Paid setup and migration services must start within 60 days of purchase or they're forfeited. Book them before you sign.
  • On exit, data stays retrievable for 90 days after cancellation, then it's deleted.

Clio updates its terms from time to time, so check the current version and your order form before you sign.

How hard is Clio to set up?#

Day to day, Clio is easy to learn; users consistently call it easy to navigate. Setup support depends on the plan: self-serve migration on Starter, guided migration from Core, and live onboarding training only on Signature and Elite. The usual owner is the managing partner or office manager, plus whoever handles billing and trust.

The harder decision is the long-term one. Leaving Clio later is slow, because documents come out matter by matter rather than in one bulk export. Many firms keep documents synced to OneDrive or Google Drive instead of only in Clio, which makes a future move far less painful.

What do users say about Clio?#

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns.

What users like. Long-time users describe Clio Manage as reliable and easy to get around. They value the breadth of features, the included accounting, and bar-association discounts that take the edge off the price.

What frustrates them. "Subscription creep" is the phrase that keeps coming up: Manage, Grow, Personal Injury, and Work are separate products, and they add up. Renewal increases are a common complaint. Some users report interface and behavior changes that arrive without warning. Some find Grow weak for what it costs, and some larger firms find the modules loosely connected. A few compare Clio's payout timing unfavorably with dedicated legal processors. And the lack of a practical bulk document export frustrates anyone who has tried to leave.

Some users also report that Clio expects every user in a firm to be on the same package. We didn't find that in Clio's published documents, so if you only want Grow or Work for some users, ask in writing and get the seat mix into your order form.

How does Clio compare with MyCase, PracticePanther, and Smokeball?#

MyCase publishes every plan price and bundles intake and a CRM from Pro up, which makes it the easiest to price without a call. PracticePanther also publishes prices and keeps things simple, but has no native AI and puts trust accounting only on its top plan. Smokeball is quote-only and built around automatic time capture and document automation, with stricter contract terms. Clio's edges are its integration marketplace and accounting on every tier.

Who should use Clio?#

Can I cancel Clio anytime?#
