Westlaw Review (2026): Westlaw Advantage Pricing and What to Negotiate

Westlaw is still the research platform most litigators measure others against. The price on the page is only part of the decision; the term length and renewal language matter just as much.

Recommended for

Litigators and research-heavy practices that rely on KeyCite and editorial research tools.

Bottom line

If your practice depends on a top-tier citator and editorial research, Westlaw Advantage is a safe choice. Buy only the jurisdictions you need, model the full multi-year cost, and put every cancellation or pricing promise in the order form.

Thomson Reuters' flagship research platform, with KeyCite, Key Numbers, headnotes and, on Westlaw Advantage, AI tools such as Deep Research and the Litigation Document Analyzer. Online pricing starts at $256.75/month for one circuit and $399.75/month for all states and federal, for new customers at firms up to 10 attorneys. The advertised savings require 2- or 3-year terms, so read the renewal terms before you sign.

Quick answer

Bottom line: Westlaw Advantage is for litigators and research-heavy firms that rely on KeyCite and editorial research. Thomson Reuters says online pricing starts at $256.75 a month for one circuit and $399.75 a month for all states and federal (vendor claim, checked October 15, 2026), for new customers at firms with up to 10 attorneys; everyone else gets a quote. We found no published free trial (confirm with Thomson Reuters). The trap: the advertised 12% and 18% discounts require 2- and 3-year terms, and the published terms auto-renew yearly unless you give 30 days' written notice, with price increases allowed on 60 days' notice.

Westlaw is Thomson Reuters' legal research platform: case law, statutes, secondary sources, KeyCite (its citator, which tells you whether a case is still good law), the West Key Number System and headnotes. The top tier, Westlaw Advantage, adds AI tools that Thomson Reuters lists as Deep Research, the Litigation Document Analyzer, Complaint Analyzer, Claims Explorer and AI Jurisdictional Surveys. Model the full multi-year cost and get any cancellation promise in writing.

What does Westlaw actually do?#

Westlaw is a full research library with editorial tools built over decades:

  • Primary law and secondary sources across federal and state jurisdictions.
  • KeyCite to check whether a case is still good law.
  • West Key Number System and headnotes for finding cases by legal issue.
  • On Westlaw Advantage, AI tools: Deep Research, the Litigation Document Analyzer (which reviews briefs for citation problems), Complaint Analyzer, Claims Explorer and AI Jurisdictional Surveys.

Thomson Reuters sells CoCounsel, its broader AI assistant, separately and in bundles. See our CoCounsel review for that product.

What this means for you: Westlaw's strength is the editorial layer, the citator and headnotes, with AI added on top in the Advantage tier.

How much does Westlaw cost?#

Westlaw Advantage online pricing (Thomson Reuters, checked 2026-10-15)

Who gets these prices:

  • New customers only. Existing customers are told to call or use the contact form.
  • Firms with up to 10 attorneys. Larger firms go through sales.
  • Thomson Reuters says most customers get access within one business day.

The pricing page doesn't say whether prices are per attorney or per firm. Confirm with Thomson Reuters and get the answer on the quote.

What are Westlaw's contract terms?#

In plain terms, Thomson Reuters' published US General Terms say that, unless your order form says otherwise, the agreement renews every year unless either side gives at least 30 days' written notice before the term ends, and Thomson Reuters may raise renewal prices if it gives you at least 60 days' written notice. Use beyond what you ordered can bill at the higher of your order rate or current standard pricing. Separate Thomson Reuters subscription terms describe built-in annual increases on multi-year terms; ask whether your order form includes one and try to cap it (confirm with Thomson Reuters). Your order form controls, so read it for term length, annual escalators, the renewal date and the notice address.

Two lawsuits filed against Thomson Reuters entities allege that subscribers were held to contract terms that differed from what they were told, including cancellation promises and multi-year terms with annual increases. These are allegations only; no court has made findings, and we don't suggest how they will turn out. We cover them in the CoCounsel review. The practical lesson: if a rep tells you that you can cancel or that the price is locked, get it written into the order form.

How hard is Westlaw to set up?#

Low for small firms buying online: sign up and receive credentials, usually within a business day. Larger firms work through a rep and an order form.

Buyer tips before you sign#

  1. Buy only the jurisdictions you need. One circuit costs well below all states and federal.
  2. Model the total cost across the full term before taking a multi-year discount.
  3. Confirm the pricing unit (per attorney or per firm).
  4. Decide whether you need CoCounsel too, or whether Advantage's built-in AI tools are enough.
  5. Write every promise into the order form, especially cancellation and price locks.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • KeyCite and editorial tools.
  • AI research tools in Advantage.
  • Published online pricing for small firms.
  • New features included during the initial term.

Cons

  • Savings tied to long terms.
  • Online prices for new customers only.
  • Larger firms must quote.
  • Auto-renewal with renewal price increases.

Lexis+ AI with Protégé is the other full-library research platform with a citator. CoCounsel is Thomson Reuters' AI assistant, sold separately or bundled. vLex Vincent AI and Descrybe are lower-cost research options for firms that don't need a full editorial library.
