Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Solos and small firms that want free, good-enough case law research and a citator through their bar membership.

Bottom line

Check your bar's member benefits page this month, use the free citator as a first pass and cross-check critical authority, and treat the Vincent AI and Upgrade buttons as a sales page.

If your bar provides it, Fastcase is the right first stop for routine case law research, and it costs you nothing. It isn't a full substitute for premium editorial research, the in-app AI buttons lead to a paid upgrade, and several bars have switched providers recently, so confirm your access before you plan around it.

Not for

Practices that need premium editorial headnotes and treatises, or AI research without paying for an upgrade.

Quick answer

Bottom line: Fastcase is for solos and small firms that want routine case law research and a citator at no cost. It's free if your state bar includes it as a member benefit; there's no trial to manage, and standalone pricing isn't published. The trap isn't a contract. It's the Vincent AI and Upgrade buttons inside the free version, which open a paid subscription page, and the fact that several bars have switched providers, so check your bar's benefit before you plan around it.

Fastcase is a legal research database of cases, statutes, regulations, and court rules. The member version includes keyword, citation, and natural-language search and the Cert citator (a tool that flags whether a case is still good law), with limited AI summaries. Fastcase merged with vLex, which Clio later acquired. Some reports say the product is being renamed Clio Library, and at least one bar appears to use that name; confirm with your bar or Clio which name and version you're getting.

Vincent AI isn't included in the free benefit. Bar benefits have also shifted: several bars switched research providers in 2025 and 2026.

What does Fastcase actually do?#

  • Search by keyword, citation, or plain-English question across case law, statutes, regulations, and court rules.
  • Cert citator to check how later courts have treated a case.
  • Limited AI-generated summaries in the member version.
  • Legacy interface: users can switch back to the older Fastcase 7 view.

The paid AI layer, Vincent AI (sold under the Clio Work name, per Clio), adds AI research on your matters, document analysis, and drafting help. We cover it separately.

How much does Fastcase cost?#

For members of participating bars, nothing. What the benefit includes varies by bar. vLex doesn't publish standalone pricing for the database, and the paid upgrade is quote-based (checked October 15, 2026).

Fastcase at a glance

What should you check before relying on it?#

Your bar's current benefit. Bar associations change research providers, and some have dropped vLex Fastcase as a member benefit in 2026 while others have added it. Last year's answer may be wrong. Check your bar's member benefits page before you buy any research subscription. If your bar is switching away, export saved research and folders before the cutoff date; confirm export options with vLex support.

The upgrade buttons. A state bar's own guidance notes that new users get confused by the Vincent AI and Upgrade buttons inside the free version, which open a subscription sales page. Tell staff what those buttons do.

How hard is Fastcase to set up?#

Not at all. Log in through your bar's member portal.

What do users say about Fastcase?#

We didn't find enough independent user feedback to summarize fairly. The most consistent point, raised in a state bar's own member guidance, is that new users get confused by the upgrade buttons inside the free version. What this means for you: a short orientation for staff prevents accidental sales calls.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Free through participating bars.
  • Broad primary-law coverage.
  • Cert citator.
  • Legacy interface still available.

Cons

  • AI is a paid upgrade.
  • Benefits vary and have been changing.
  • Standalone pricing not published.
  • Lighter editorial content than premium platforms.

How does Fastcase compare with Vincent AI, CourtListener, and Descrybe?#

Vincent AI (Clio Work) is the paid AI layer on the same content. CourtListener is a free non-profit database of opinions and federal filings. Descrybe is low-cost AI research with its own citator. If your bar gives you Fastcase, start there and add a paid tool only for the gaps.

Who should use Fastcase?#

FAQ#

Is Fastcase free?#

Yes, for members of state bars that include it as a benefit. What's included varies by bar.

Does free Fastcase include Vincent AI?#

No. Vincent AI is a paid upgrade; the in-app buttons lead to a subscription page.

Is Fastcase now Clio Library?#

Possibly. Fastcase merged with vLex, which Clio acquired, and some reports say the product is being renamed Clio Library. We couldn't confirm the rename from an official vendor page, so check the name your bar uses and confirm with Clio.

My bar dropped Fastcase. What now?#

Export saved research before the cutoff, and use whatever research benefit your bar now provides.

Is any of this sponsored?#

No. If that changes, the listing will be labeled Sponsored.
