Luminance Review (2026): Enterprise Contract AI, and a Master Agreement Worth Reading First

Luminance is enterprise contract AI: negotiation in Word, a repository that reads your whole contract portfolio, and workflows that route contracts across the business. The price is a quote. The master agreement is public, and it rewards buyers who read it before the demo.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Large law firms and corporate legal departments with high contract volume across legal, procurement, finance and sales.

Bottom line

For large firms and legal departments with heavy contract volume, Luminance deserves a proof-of-value pilot on your own paper; negotiate the renewal term, the price cap and the document allowance into the order form.

Enterprise contract intelligence from a company founded by University of Cambridge researchers: playbook-driven markups in Word, a repository that surfaces renewals, risks and obligations across thousands of contracts, and intake-to-signature workflows. Quote-only, with a free proof-of-value pilot; the master agreement auto-renews for a term as long as your first one unless you give 90 days' notice, and lets renewal fees rise by an inflation index plus three points a year.

Not for

Solos and small firms, occasional contract reviewers, and buyers who want short or monthly terms.

Quick answer

Bottom line: Luminance is enterprise contract intelligence for large law firms and corporate legal departments with high contract volume: playbook-driven markups in Microsoft Word, a repository that flags renewals, risks and obligations across your whole portfolio, and intake-to-signature workflows. Prices aren't published; it's quote-only (checked October 15, 2026), and its AWS Marketplace listing points to pricing by number of documents stored over a 36-month term. A free proof-of-value pilot is available. The traps are in the public master agreement: it auto-renews for a term as long as your first one unless you give 90 days' written notice, and renewal fees can rise by a UK inflation index plus three percentage points a year. U.S. buyers should negotiate a shorter renewal term and a fixed price cap in the order form. Not built for small firms.

  15. How we reviewed

We built this review from Luminance's own website and the agreements on its Legal Hub (master agreement last updated October 6, 2026, and proof of value terms). Everything was checked October 15, 2026. Features are vendor claims and change, so confirm with Luminance.

What does Luminance actually do?#

Luminance organizes its platform into three jobs, per its site:

  • Negotiate. Applies your playbooks, approved templates, fallback positions and "gold-standard" clauses as you draft or redline, and generates context-aware markups in Word, even where no formal playbook position exists yet. It also pulls in precedent: what you agreed with the same counterparty last time, and how comparable terms were negotiated across your portfolio.
  • Discover (repository). Turns the contract portfolio into answers: upcoming renewals, financial exposure, contractual risks and missed payments, with alerts to the teams that need to act. Luminance says it can compare up to 10,000 contracts at once against your playbooks.
  • Automate (workflows). Routes contracts to the right people, advances them automatically when conditions are met, and lets you create workflow templates with plain-language instructions.

Integrations listed include Word, Outlook, DocuSign and LexisNexis. On security, Luminance says it holds ISO 27001 certification, undergoes SOC 2 Type II examinations and commissions independent penetration testing.

What this means for you: Luminance is less a contract review add-in than a contract system for the whole organization. That's its strength, and the reason it's priced and contracted like enterprise software.

How much does Luminance cost?#

Luminance doesn't publish prices; you request a demo. Ask the vendor, and treat any figure you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.

Luminance's own AWS Marketplace listing (a private-offer-only listing, checked October 15, 2026) prices on document count, meaning the total documents stored at a given time, over a 36-month contract, billed monthly through your AWS bill. The dollar figure shown there is a placeholder ceiling, not a price. What this means for you: expect a three-year ask, keep dead contracts out of the repository to stay in a lower band, and confirm with Luminance whether the count is measured at peak or on average. If your company has committed AWS spend, ask your AWS rep whether a Marketplace purchase can count toward it.

What the master agreement does reveal is how pricing is structured. Your order form sets subscription allowances, and there's a fair-use cap on documents uploaded each year at 200% of those allowances, regardless of deletions. In other words, deleting old contracts doesn't free up upload room within the year. When you get a quote, ask:

  • What the allowance is measured in (documents stored, uploaded, users, or a mix).
  • What happens if you exceed it, and at what price.
  • How long the initial term is, since the renewal term matches it.

What does the free pilot look like?#

Luminance's proof of value terms let you use the product free of charge for evaluation, for two weeks by default or another period Luminance confirms by email. Either side can end the pilot on seven days' written notice. The pilot ends automatically when it expires or when you sign an order form.

What's in Luminance's master agreement?#

Luminance publishes its master agreement (version 3.1, last updated October 6, 2026). Your order form controls where it says something different. Paraphrased:

  • Auto-renewal. At the end of the initial term, the order form renews for a period equal to the initial term, unless either side gives written notice of non-renewal at least 90 days before the term ends. Sign for three years and you can renew for three more by doing nothing.
  • Renewal price increases. Renewal fees can't exceed the prior term's fees increased by the annual change in a consumer price index published by the UK's Office for National Statistics, plus three percentage points a year, compounded over the renewal term. That increase applies without any further agreement. What this means for you: U.S. buyers are tied to a UK inflation measure by default, so negotiate a fixed percentage cap instead.
  • Renewal allowances stay the same as the prior term unless agreed otherwise.
  • Refunds are limited to specific cases, such as the warranty remedy. On termination, committed fees that are undisputed become immediately due.
  • Data after termination. Luminance keeps your data and access available during a defined retention period (confirm the length with Luminance) so you can download or delete it; after that, data and outputs are destroyed and can't be recovered.

How hard is Luminance to set up?#

High, as you'd expect for enterprise software. Plan for playbook configuration, repository migration and workflow design, plus training for legal and business users. The heavy lift is encoding your positions: what's acceptable on liability caps, indemnities and governing law, and who can approve exceptions.

Buyer tips before you sign#

  1. Run the free proof of value on real contracts and real counterparties. Treat vendor time-savings figures as claims until your pilot confirms them.
  2. Ask for a 12-month pilot or fixed multi-year pricing if the quote assumes a 36-month term.
  3. Negotiate the renewal term, so a three-year deal doesn't renew for three more by default.
  4. Replace the index-plus-three increase with a fixed cap that suits a U.S. budget.
  5. Understand the document allowance and the 200% upload cap before you load an archive.
  6. Confirm the data retention period and export format before you need them.

Pros and cons#

  • Portfolio-wide repository with renewal and obligation alerts.
