Lexis+ with Protégé Review (2026): LexisNexis' AI, and How to Buy It

Lexis+ with Protégé is LexisNexis' AI research and drafting platform, grounded in Lexis content and Shepard's. It's sold as part of a bundle, so the price you need is the bundle's, not the AI line's.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Firms already on Lexis+, litigators who value Shepard's citation verification, and firms that want AI over their own document management system.

Bottom line

If your firm already runs on Lexis+, Protégé is the natural AI add. There is no self-serve trial: you must request one. Price the whole Lexis+ bundle, and get the escalator and renewal-notice terms written into your order form.

AI research and drafting grounded in LexisNexis primary law, secondary sources, and Shepard's citation checks, with document Vaults and shared Workrooms. Pricing is quote-only and sold on top of a Lexis+ subscription, and renewal terms are set in each order form.

Not for

Firms not on Lexis, buyers who need a published price or short commitments, or anyone looking for answers they won't verify.

Pricing from

Quote-only; free trial only on request (ask for it) (lexisnexis.com, vendor claims checked 2026-10-15)

Pros

  • Grounded in LexisNexis primary law, secondary sources, and Practical Guidance (LexisNexis)
  • Shepard's Verify checks citations in AI answers and drafts (LexisNexis)
  • Vault, review tables, Workrooms, and reusable agent skills (LexisNexis)
  • LexisNexis says customer data isn't used to train AI models (LexisNexis)

Cons

  • No published price; sold as an add-on to Lexis+ content
  • US renewal and escalator terms set per order form; get them in writing
  • Feature packaging by tier isn't published
  • Users report confidently wrong or mis-summarized holdings

Quick answer

Bottom line: For firms already on Lexis+. Price is quote-only, and it's sold on top of a Lexis+ subscription, so price the whole bundle. There's no sign-up trial: a free trial is available only on request, so ask your rep for one before you sign. The contract trap: renewal escalator and notice window aren't published for the US and live in your order form; LexisNexis' published Australia/India terms renew at the prior price plus the higher of a percentage increase or usage adjustment. Confirm the US terms with a US rep and get them in writing.

Lexis+ with Protégé is LexisNexis' AI platform for legal research and drafting. It was called Lexis+ AI until February 2026; existing users kept access under the new name. Protégé is the AI assistant itself, and it answers research questions with linked citations and Shepard's signals, drafts litigation and transactional documents, and checks citations with Shepard's Verify. Vault, review tables, Workrooms, and agent skills handle document sets and team reuse. :::

We, the AI Tools For Law team, built this review from LexisNexis' own product pages, terms, and official videos, ABA ethics guidance, and our overall reading of public user feedback. Prices and terms are vendor claims checked October 15, 2026. Confirm with a US LexisNexis rep.

Disclosure: LexisNexis hasn't paid for this review, and none of the links in it are paid placements. Nothing here is legal advice.

What does Lexis+ with Protégé actually do?

LexisNexis groups the features into research, drafting, and work with your own documents.

  • Research. Ask a question in plain English and Protégé answers from LexisNexis primary law, LexisNexis' own secondary sources and treatises, Practical Guidance (practice notes and forms across 25 practice areas), web and news sources, and your uploaded documents. In LexisNexis' official walkthrough, answers come with linked citations, Shepard's signals (the familiar flags showing whether a case is still good law), and suggested follow-up questions.
  • Drafting. Pre-built workflows draft transactional documents (for example, turning a term sheet into an agreement), litigation documents such as complaints, motions, and briefs, and client communications.
  • Shepard's Verify checks the citations in AI answers, uploaded documents, and your drafts, and flags statements the cited authority doesn't support.
  • Vault stores large sets of documents, spreadsheets, images, and video for analysis across sessions. Review tables pull terms or facts out of many documents into a grid.
  • Workrooms are shared team spaces with permissions and activity history.
  • Agent skills are reusable AI tasks built from your firm's templates, plus a library LexisNexis provides.
  • Document management connectors for iManage, SharePoint, NetDocuments, and others.

LexisNexis says (vendor claim, checked October 15, 2026) customer data isn't used to train its AI models.

What this means for you: The feature list is long and the price list is empty, so the order form is where you find out what you bought.

How much does Lexis+ with Protégé cost?#

LexisNexis doesn't publish a price. You call for a custom quote (vendor claim, checked October 15, 2026). A free trial is available only on request; ask for it before you negotiate.

The structure matters more than any single number. LexisNexis' published global-platform terms for Australia and India describe the AI service as requiring a current Lexis+ subscription plus a minimum content package. In other words, it's an add-on, not a standalone product. Those aren't US terms, so confirm with your US rep how your bundle is built. Either way, compare the whole bundle (Lexis+, the content package, and Protégé) against alternatives, not the AI line by itself.

Also ask whether Vault storage, review tables, Workrooms, and agent skills are in your tier or priced separately. LexisNexis doesn't publish that.

What are the renewal and contract terms?#

LexisNexis' US general terms leave renewal and price terms to each subscription agreement, so your order form is the contract that counts. Two published LexisNexis documents show how it tends to go:

  • The Australia and India global-platform terms auto-renew for 12-month terms at the prior year's price plus either an annual percentage increase or a usage-based adjustment, whichever is higher. Those are non-US terms; confirm what applies in your US agreement.
  • LexisNexis' US subscription agreement for another product (Juris) uses a three-year initial term, then annual auto-renewal at then-current prices, with 30 days' notice. Expect a multi-year ask for Protégé too.

How hard is it to set up?#

For research, it's light: a web platform with a guided interface, and existing Lexis+ AI users already have access under the new name. The heavier lifts are optional: connecting your document management system, loading Vaults, and building agent skills from firm templates. That's a project for whoever owns IT or knowledge management. Most of the time goes into negotiating the contract.

Ethics: verify every case#

Shepard's Verify is a real help, and it's still not a substitute for reading the case. ABA Model Rule 1.1 requires competence, and ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) addresses lawyers' duties when using generative AI, including verifying output and protecting client confidences. Check your own jurisdiction's rules too. (Not legal advice.)

What do users say about Lexis+ with Protégé?#

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns.

What users like. It's useful for routine research, document review, and first drafts, and its tight connection to Lexis content and Shepard's is the main draw.

What frustrates them. Multiple users report wrong answers delivered with confidence: holdings misstated or mis-summarized, outdated law, and occasionally authorities that don't exist. It's weaker on nuanced analysis. And the pricing is opaque, usually bundled with multi-year commitments. Linked citations are only as good as the person who clicks them.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Lexis content and Shepard's behind every answer.
  • Shepard's Verify for AI output and drafts.
  • Vault, review tables, and Workrooms for document-heavy and team work.
  • Document management connectors.
  • No training on customer data, per LexisNexis.

Cons

  • Quote-only, sold on top of Lexis+ content.
  • Renewal terms set per order form; published non-US terms favor LexisNexis.
  • Tier packaging unpublished.
  • Confident errors, per users.

How does it compare with CoCounsel and Vincent AI?#

Your research platform usually decides this. CoCounsel is the Thomson Reuters equivalent, built on Westlaw and Practical Law, with its own auto-renewal and notice terms. Vincent AI (now in Clio Work) runs on vLex content and doesn't require Westlaw or Lexis. Harvey targets large firms and in-house teams. If you're a Lexis firm, Protégé avoids paying for a second research database.

Who should use Lexis+ with Protégé?#

FAQ#

As of October 15, 2026, LexisNexis doesn't publish prices. It's quote-only, and a free trial is available only on request. US pricing, minimum term, and escalator aren't published; confirm with a US LexisNexis rep. Price the whole Lexis+ bundle, because the AI is sold on top of a Lexis+ subscription.

Is Lexis+ with Protégé the same as Lexis+ AI?#

Yes. Per LexisNexis (checked October 15, 2026), it renamed Lexis+ AI to Lexis+ with Protégé in February 2026, and existing users kept access.

Can I buy Protégé without Lexis+?#

LexisNexis' published non-US terms describe the AI as requiring a Lexis+ subscription and a minimum content package. Confirm how US packaging works with a US LexisNexis rep.

Yes. Shepard's Verify checks citations in AI answers, documents, and drafts, and flags unsupported statements. You should still read the cases.

Does LexisNexis train AI on my data?#

Is any of this sponsored?#

No. If that changes, the listing will be labeled "Sponsored," and payment won't change the verdict.
