LEAP Legal Software Review (2026): Practice Management and the Fine Print

LEAP pairs practice management with a large forms library and document automation. Its standard contract runs long by default, and the exit has a step most buyers miss.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Small firms that want matters, document automation, billing and trust accounting in one system.

Bottom line

Worth considering for small firms that want document automation and accounting together, including estate planners pairing it with WealthCounsel. Negotiate the term down, calendar the 30-day notice, and export before the term ends.

All-in-one practice management: matters, document automation and a forms library, timekeeping, billing, trust accounting, online payments, reporting, a mobile app and AI. Pricing is not published. Under its General Terms (August 1, 2026), the initial term defaults to 36 months, it auto-renews, you can only leave for convenience at the end of a term on 30 days' notice, and after exit a paid single-user Historical Use License continues until you send a written Completion Notice.

Not for

Firms that want month-to-month flexibility or an easy exit.

Quick answer

Bottom line: LEAP is for small firms that do heavy document and forms work and want matters, document automation, billing and trust accounting in one system, including estate planners who pair it with WealthCounsel. Pricing is quote-only (not published, checked October 15, 2026), and no free trial is published (confirm with LEAP). The trap is the contract: the initial term defaults to 36 months and auto-renews, you can leave for convenience only at term end on 30 days' written notice, and after exit a paid Historical Use License keeps billing until you send a written Completion Notice.

What this means for you: negotiate the term down, calendar the notice date the day you sign, and export your data before the term ends.

What does LEAP actually do?#

  • Practice management: matters, contacts and documents in one system.
  • Document automation and management: create, auto-populate, edit, share and store documents, with a library of legal forms and templates.
  • Timekeeping that records billable time automatically.
  • Billing and legal accounting, including retainer funds and trust accounting.
  • Online payments, powered by FeeWise in the US.
  • Reporting and a mobile app.
  • AI: the US terms list LawY AI Assistant and Matter AI (powered by Corto) as companion products activated with LEAP, each subject to its own third-party terms.
  • WealthCounsel, where set out in your Order Form.

What this means for you: LEAP's strength is producing documents from matter data. Firms with heavy forms work get the most from it.

How much does LEAP cost?#

LEAP doesn't publish US prices, so you'll need to request a quote. Ask for the per-user monthly amount, onboarding and data transition costs, and how renewal pricing is set.

What are LEAP's contract terms?#

From LEAP's General Terms (August 1, 2026) and the US-specific terms, paraphrased:

  • Initial term: whatever your Order Form says, or 36 months if it says nothing.
  • Renewal: automatic. The default renewal term is 12 months unless your Order Form sets another. One country schedule in the same document swaps in a 36-month renewal; we read the US schedule as keeping 12 months, but confirm the renewal length in your Order Form.
  • Leaving for convenience: only at the end of the initial or renewal term, with at least 30 days' written notice.
  • Fee increases: LEAP can raise fees for or during a renewal term with reasonable advance notice. If you object to an increase, the terms let you terminate.
  • After exit: extracting your data is your responsibility. On expiry or termination you automatically enter a Historical Use License, billed at your current single-user monthly amount, limited to extracting data. It continues until you send written notice that you no longer need access (the Completion Notice).
  • Before installation: you can cancel with 7 days' notice but pay for all work done, including data transition and training.
  • US specifics: no money-back guarantee, a $25 failed-payment fee, up to 18% annual interest on overdue amounts, and 14 days' notice to cancel scheduled training without paying expenses.
  • Liability: capped at fees paid in the prior 12 months, with a US$1 million "super cap" for certain claims.

What this means for you: a super cap is a higher, separate limit for specific kinds of claims. Even so, LEAP's exposure is limited, so keep your own backups and exports.

  • Testimonials: if you give one, LEAP gets a perpetual license to edit and reuse it.

What do users say about LEAP?#

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns.

What users like. Feedback tends to praise document automation and assembly, accounting depth, and the WealthCounsel tie-in for estate planners. Some users find support helpful.

What frustrates them. Some users report instability (Word add-in crashes, documents or entries not saving), weaker support than they expected, a mobile app that's hard to use for editing, templates that are hard to configure, and Microsoft 365 sync problems. Long minimum terms and renewal increases come up often. Treat these as patterns to check in your demo, not verified facts.

Buyer tips before you sign#

  1. Negotiate the initial term down from the 36-month default, and write the renewal length into the Order Form.
  2. Ask for a renewal price cap.
  3. Calendar the 30-day notice before each term end.
  4. Export before term end, then send the Completion Notice in writing.
  5. Know there's no US money-back guarantee, so test thoroughly in the demo and ask LEAP whether a trial is available.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Document automation and forms.
  • Billing and trust accounting.
  • AI companions included.
  • WealthCounsel option.

Cons

  • Long default term.
  • Term-end-only exit.
  • Billing continues after exit until Completion Notice.
  • No US money-back guarantee.

How does LEAP compare?#

Clio offers month-to-month plans and a large integration ecosystem. Smokeball is also strong on forms and automatic time tracking for small firms. Actionstep suits firms that want configurable workflows and accounting. WealthCounsel is the estate planning drafting membership LEAP can bundle.
