CosmoLex Review (2026): Accounting First, Practice Management Included

CosmoLex puts practice management and real legal accounting in one product, with trust accounting on the entry plan. The fine print to read: renewals can be repriced, prepaid fees aren't refunded, and getting your data out is your job.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Solos and small firms that want trust and firm accounting inside their practice management system instead of a separate QuickBooks file.

Bottom line

Most firms land on Core at $99/user/mo (monthly billing; annual saves $120/user/yr), with a free trial. It auto-renews, renewals can be repriced, and prepaid fees aren't refunded, so ask for the current agreement and a renewal cap in writing, and export your data before cancelling.

A strong pick for small firms that want trust accounting built in rather than bolted on, with every price published. Know the terms before you prepay: renewals can carry a higher price, prepaid fees aren't refunded, and you have to pull your data out before you cancel.

Not for

Firms that want deep intake and CRM without paying for add-ons, and larger firms.

Quick answer

Bottom line: CosmoLex is for solos and small firms that want trust accounting built into their practice management system. Prices are published: $49, $99 (Core, where most firms land), or $129 per user per month on monthly billing, with $120 per user per year off for annual (vendor claims checked October 15, 2026). There's a free trial with no card required. The trap: the plan auto-renews, the price can rise at each renewal, prepaid fees aren't refunded, and exporting your data before you cancel is your job, because deletion can start 30 days after the account ends.

Trust accounting, compliance reports, and bank reconciliation come on every plan. Pro adds a full general ledger, payables, and bank feeds.

What does CosmoLex actually do?#

Most practice management tools treat accounting as an integration problem: send invoices out, let QuickBooks sort out the books. CosmoLex builds the books in.

  • Time and billing: time tracking, invoicing, and retainers, with LEDES (the coded billing format insurers and corporate clients often require) and split billing from Core.
  • Trust accounting: a trust ledger with compliance reporting and bank reconciliation on every plan. This is the record your bar's trust-account rules expect you to keep.
  • Firm accounting on Pro: a general ledger, accounts payable, and bank feeds, which is what lets some firms drop separate bookkeeping software.
  • Practice management: matters, documents, calendaring, and a client portal.
  • Payments: CosmoLex Pay takes card, debit, and ACH payments, with next-day funding advertised.
  • Integrations: Microsoft 365, QuickBooks Online, Dropbox, and Zapier.

Add-ons sold separately include CosmoLex CRM (intake and email drip campaigns), LexShare and LexSign for document sharing and e-signature, websites, and managed Google Ads.

What this means for you: You can price CosmoLex to the dollar before a sales call, and you don't have to buy the top plan to get trust accounting done properly.

Source: cosmolex.com/pricingCosmoLex pricing page, checked 2026-10-15. Prices per user per month on monthly billing; annual billing saves $120 per user per year.

What this means for you: Launch is a genuine plan for a solo who bills hourly and holds retainers. Core is where most small firms belong, especially anyone billing insurers. Pro earns its extra $30 only if you actually retire your general-ledger software.

On annual billing the math is simple: $10 off per user per month, so Core works out to $89 and Pro to $119. Remember that annual means prepaid, and prepaid means not refunded.

What are CosmoLex's contract terms?#

The subscription agreement posted on CosmoLex's site is dated 2019. Ask CosmoLex for the current version before you sign, and confirm the points below still apply. In the posted version, four points matter.

  • Auto-renewal. Your first term is whatever you picked at signup. After that it renews for the same length until someone cancels. Either side can decline to renew.
  • Cancel anytime, no refund. You can cancel whenever you like, but money you've already paid for the term stays paid. On an annual plan that's real money.
  • Repricing at renewal. CosmoLex can raise the price at the start of each new term. Ask for a renewal cap in your order, in writing.
  • Your data, your job. If you cancel, the agreement makes retrieving your data your responsibility, and you're expected to do it before cancelling. CosmoLex may permanently delete data starting 30 days after the account ends. If CosmoLex is the one ending things, you get at least 30 days to retrieve it.

A question to raise: the content license#

The posted 2019 agreement says that uploading content gives CosmoLex and its affiliates a permanent, worldwide license to use, copy, modify, and display it, for the stated purpose of marketing, promoting, or improving the service. In plain English, the clause as written isn't limited to your non-client material. Ask CosmoLex whether the current agreement still includes it, how it applies to client data, and whether a confidentiality or data-processing addendum overrides it. Read the privacy policy alongside it.

How hard is CosmoLex to set up?#

Low to moderate. There's a free trial with no card required, and every plan includes group training and a knowledge base.

The software part is easy. The accounting part is the real project: you'll enter opening trust balances for every client, connect bank accounts, and reconcile against your old records. Do it at a month end and have your bookkeeper sign off on each client's opening trust balance before you go live.

What do users say about CosmoLex?#

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns. Users like having billing, a general ledger and trust accounting in one system, and some describe support as responsive. Recent complaints include bank feeds that stop syncing, limited reporting, a clunky interface, missing features, and support that feels slower or outsourced. The vendor's site shows a star rating without naming its source, so we've left it out. Your best test is the free trial: run your actual billing and a real trust reconciliation in it.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Trust accounting on every plan, not held back for the top tier.
  • Every price published, with a $49 entry point.
  • A full general ledger on Pro that can replace separate bookkeeping software.
  • Support and training included on every plan.

Cons

  • Renewals can be repriced, and the plan auto-renews.
  • Prepaid fees aren't refunded on cancellation.
  • Data export is your responsibility before you cancel, with deletion possible after 30 days.
  • Intake, CRM, and e-signature cost extra.

How does CosmoLex compare with PracticePanther, Clio, and MyCase?#

PracticePanther also publishes every price, but holds full trust and operating accounting for its top plan. Clio includes accounting on every plan and has the biggest integration marketplace, but publishes only its entry price. MyCase includes AI from its Pro plan and sells accounting as a per-user add-on. CosmoLex's pitch is narrower and clearer: accounting done inside the system you already bill from.
