Claude for Lawyers (2026): Plan Choice, Confidentiality, Verification

Claude is a general-purpose AI assistant, not a legal research product. For a law firm the real decisions are which plan, what the terms do with client information, and how you'll check its work. This guide walks through all three.

Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Firms that want an AI assistant for long documents, summaries, drafting, and Outlook or Microsoft 365 workflows, under a business plan.

Bottom line

Team and Enterprise don't train on your content by default; personal Pro and Max do unless you opt out. Enterprise is $20 per seat plus usage at API rates, so set spending limits. Nothing replaces checking the output.

A general assistant for long-document analysis, summaries, and first drafts, where the plan you choose decides how client information is treated. Use Team or Enterprise for client matters, set spend controls on Enterprise, and verify every citation and factual claim.

Not for

Citation-dependent research without verification, client work on personal plans, and health information below Enterprise.

Pricing from

Pro $20/month ($17/month billed annually); Enterprise $20/seat/month plus usage (claude.com/pricing, vendor claims checked 2026-10-15)

Pros

  • Large context for long documents (claude.com/pricing)
  • Microsoft 365 and Outlook integration (claude.com/pricing)
  • No training on content by default on Team and Enterprise (claude.com/pricing)
  • Commercial terms treat your content as confidential and exclude it from training (anthropic.com/legal/commercial-terms)

Cons

  • No legal research database or citator
  • Personal plans train on chats unless you opt out (claude.com/pricing)
  • Enterprise usage is billed at API rates, so cost is open-ended (claude.com/pricing)
  • Audit logs, custom retention, and the HIPAA-ready offering are Enterprise-only (claude.com/pricing)

Quick answer

Bottom line: Claude, from Anthropic, is a general AI assistant for firms that want help with long documents, summaries, and first drafts. It has no legal research database or citator, so every citation needs checking. Anthropic lists Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed annually), Max from $100 a month, and Enterprise at $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, annual only; Team seat prices aren't shown on the pricing page, so confirm with Anthropic (vendor claims checked October 15, 2026). There's no trial, but there is a Free plan. The traps: personal plans auto-renew and fees are generally non-refundable, so cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, and Enterprise usage has no built-in ceiling unless you set spending limits.

For client work, the plan matters more than the model. Per Anthropic's pricing page, Team and Enterprise don't train on your content by default, while Free, Pro, and Max train unless you opt out. Audit logs, custom data retention, and a HIPAA-ready offering are Enterprise-only.

What does Claude actually do?#

  • Chat and analysis of uploaded files, with very large context windows for long documents.
  • Projects, Research, Memory, Skills, and Connectors for organizing work and reaching other data sources.
  • Claude for Microsoft 365 and Outlook, Claude in Chrome on paid plans, and Claude Code.
  • Web search and document, slide, and design outputs.

What it doesn't have is a legal database. It can summarize a deposition or draft a letter from your facts, but it isn't a substitute for a research platform with a citator.

What this means for you: For client matters, use Team or Enterprise. If ethics or records rules mean you need audit logs or retention control, Team isn't enough; that's Enterprise. A lawyer on a personal Pro plan should, at minimum, opt out of training in settings before any client-related use.

What do the terms say about confidentiality?#

Commercial terms (Team, Enterprise, API). Anthropic's commercial terms say it won't train models on customer content and treat that content as your confidential information. Anthropic also defends paying customers against certain third-party intellectual property claims about their use and outputs, with exclusions. Either side can end the agreement for convenience, and Anthropic can change terms or published rates on 30 days' notice. Disputes go to arbitration.

Publicity. The commercial terms let Anthropic name your organization as a customer and use its logo unless you opt out. Firms with confidentiality or marketing-rule concerns should opt out when signing up.

Consumer terms (Free, Pro, Max). Even after you opt out of training, conversations you rate with thumbs up or down, and chats flagged for safety review, can still be used for training. Tell staff not to rate client-matter chats. Fees are generally non-refundable, subscriptions auto-renew, and Anthropic's liability is capped at the greater of what you paid in the prior six months or $100.

How should lawyers verify Claude's output?#

The ABA's Formal Opinion 512 on generative AI points lawyers to their duties of competence, confidentiality, client communication, and reasonable fees when using these tools. In practice:

  • Check every citation in a citator, and read the authority. Anthropic's terms put responsibility for checking output on the customer.
  • Check factual claims against your record.
  • Keep a firm AI policy: which plan, which matters, what staff may upload, and who reviews output.

Pros and cons#

Pros

  • Long-document analysis and drafting.
  • Microsoft 365 and Outlook integration.
  • No training by default on business plans.
  • Commercial terms treat your content as confidential.

Cons

  • No legal database or citator.
  • Personal plans train unless you opt out.
  • Open-ended Enterprise usage costs.
  • Governance features are Enterprise-only.

How does Claude compare with CoCounsel, Lexis+ with Protégé, and Harvey?#

CoCounsel and Lexis+ with Protégé combine AI with legal research content and citators. Harvey is an enterprise legal AI platform. A general assistant like Claude may cost less for drafting and document work, but citation-dependent research still needs a research platform.
