Verdict at a glance

Recommended for

Small and midsize firms that want billing, accounting and built-in email in one cloud system.

Bottom line

A good fit for small and midsize firms that want accounting and email inside their practice management system. Negotiate a price-increase cap and the renewal length, and calendar the 60-day notice.

Cloud practice management with built-in email, document management, calendaring, billing, accounting, LEDES invoicing, integrated payments, reporting and branded client portals. Enterprise is $79, Enterprise Plus $99 and Enterprise Insights $119 per user a month, billed annually, plus one-time implementation fees. Its terms (updated August 18, 2026) let CARET raise fees annually at its discretion, including during the initial term, and add fees on 30 days' notice. Annual orders renew for the longer of the original term or 12 months unless you give 60 days' notice.

Not for

Quick answer

Bottom line: CARET Legal is for small and midsize firms that want built-in email, billing and full accounting inside their practice management system. CARET publishes prices of $79, $99 and $119 per user a month, billed annually, plus one-time implementation fees (vendor claims checked October 15, 2026), and no free trial is published (confirm with CARET). The trap is pricing power: CARET can raise fees annually at its discretion, even mid-term, and can add or increase fees, including for AI, on 30 days' notice. User overages found in an audit are billed at list price back to the start of the term, and annual orders auto-renew unless you give 60 days' notice.

What this means for you: negotiate a price-increase cap and the renewal length into your Order, and keep seats within your license.

The AI Tools For Law team researched this review from CARET Legal's pricing page and terms of service (updated August 18, 2026), plus our reading of public user feedback. Everything was checked October 15, 2026. Prices and terms change, so confirm with CARET before you buy.

Disclosure: Some listings on AI Tools For Law may be sponsored or include affiliate or referral links. Paid placements are always labeled "Sponsored," and payment never changes our verdicts. CARET Legal hasn't paid for this review. Nothing here is legal advice.
  • Built-in email, so correspondence lives with the matter.
  • Document management, calendaring, tasks and contacts.
  • Billing and accounting, with LEDES invoicing and integrated payments.
  • Reporting and a client portal, which can be custom-branded for clients and outside collaborators.
  • Higher tiers: CARET Analytics dashboards, automated workflows, custom permissions, department-based accounting, native document editing, unlimited matter-document storage and AI-generated document summaries.

CARET Legal is provided by Abacus Data Systems, Inc. d/b/a CARET. It's the product formerly sold as Zola Suite: zolasuite.com/pricing now shows the same CARET Legal plans. If you're on Zola Suite or were quoted under that name, expect CARET Legal plans and terms. CARET's sister products AbacusLaw and Amicus Attorney are quote-only.

What this means for you: CARET is one of the few practice management systems that puts email and full accounting inside the same product.

From CARET's pricing page, checked October 15, 2026:

CARET says all plans include 24/7 Tier 1 phone and email support. White-glove onboarding, training and data migration packages are priced by need, so get the implementation fee quoted in writing.

From CARET's terms of service, paraphrased:

  • Price increases: fees may be increased annually at CARET's sole discretion, including during the initial term and any renewal.
  • Added fees: on 30 days' notice, CARET can increase or add fees, including for cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence or third-party services.
  • Renewal: annual orders renew automatically for the longer of the original term or 12 months, unless either side gives written notice at least 60 days before expiry. A three-year deal renews for three years.
  • Refunds: payments are non-refundable except as the terms provide.
  • Billing errors: you must raise them within 60 days of the first invoice showing the problem.
  • Audits: CARET can audit user counts. If you've exceeded licensed users, the increase applies at list price, backdated to the start of the term.
  • CARET's exit right: CARET can end your subscription for convenience on 30 days' notice, refunding unused prepaid fees.
  • Your data: you keep ownership of it.

What this means for you: a price you sign at isn't locked in. Without a negotiated cap, both the per-user rate and new AI or infrastructure fees can go up during your term.

We read public user feedback and looked for patterns.

What users like. Feedback tends to praise the all-in-one design, especially built-in email and accounting, and helpful support.

What frustrates them. Some recent users report bugs, slower support, accounting problems and difficulty cancelling. Some also describe renewal increases and plan changes that raised their annual charges noticeably, which fits the increase clauses in the terms. Treat these as patterns to check, not verified facts.

Buyer tips before you sign#

  1. Negotiate a price-increase cap that applies during the initial term and renewals.
  2. Set the renewal length in the Order, so a multi-year deal doesn't renew for the same multi-year term.
  3. Calendar the 60-day notice date.
  4. Keep seats within your license.
  5. Get implementation fees in writing.
